Service Learning Reflection
NCLC249, I truly believed I knew nothing about Web 2.0 and all the extensions the web allows a user to grow. As the semester has come to an end, I have come to the conclusion I know less than 0.00001% of the 95,600,000 search results from Google regarding Service Learning and all it has to offer. The opportunity has exposed me to fabulous emergent technologies and I can make the connections to the source of the prehistoric concepts. However, at the speed and use of how the internet is developing, can anyone retain that much knowledge and does anyone need the use of the web at that capacity? I personally have experience a sensory overload and feel safer crawling back into my cave and continuing life the way before NCLC 249.
Life before NCLC249… was how to surf the web when I did not want to work. XBOX 360 CoD is for my husband and children, definitely not my cup of tea. I never felt a need or had the time to be on the internet during personal time unless it was to research what to do and how much it would cost me. I enjoy the out doors to much. My numerous jobs, past and present, exposed me to new technologies of how business process changes to streamline and conduct best practices. As my JOB SEARCH 101 presentation explored how recruiters utilize the internet to meet industry standards for hiring practices and how applicants and candidate market themselves, this was my greatest contribution to the class. Job hunting, it is a benefit to anyone’s future. And sharing what I have experiences before this course make be a SME to the subject.
I’m a caveman. NCLC249 exposed me to the concept of Web 2.0 Tim O’Reilly evolution on who developed who, the capital market of who bought who and where do we go from here and Warschauers hard to read and understand foundation of the prehistoric society of bonding was easy to, link me to the article, hit print, pick up and document, edit and run with it in class discussions. As we moved on in the semester and touched on the artsy what can “you” do with it, I ran back into my cave and looked for sticks and rocks to make a fire. The personal conceptual development was not what I expected from the course. I wanted and need the manual. Follow these steps and this is the results. I was not looking to spend the time to think out side the box of how do I get to the end results without a manual. At least not in the 17 weeks this course provided as a Public Administrative major. I enjoy art and I enjoy spending the time to think outside of the box, when there is time. From start to finish in the 15 weeks to date, I can truly say the one greatest take away I want use and retain would be my DELICOUS.com. Unfortunately, I have not been able to use it as much as I would like to. Time has been my down fall this semester.
Life After NCLC249… When all the semester grades are administered and my life at work has settled for a split second, I intend to go back and reflect on what tools I was exposed to that would help me simplify my life, and I don’t mean The Simple Life with Paris Hilton! But simplify my so called life to having maximize on group collaborations and developing effective ways to communicate with work and personal. A down fall with Web 2.0 technology is that my world fronds upon putting too much information on the web. My concerns with identify theft and as often as we are asked to create a profile on some website for a class demonstration, I cringe.
Speaking of cringing, I was not aware the course required community volunteer work, I guess I should have read the fine print. As I am managing to continue to meet my hours, I would like to add that my experience to the community contribution has been a bad experience. As I was not able to locate a partnership close to my home. Therefore, the 2 hour commute from Woodbridge to Reston and back was not a delight but the only service I was able to return my calls and accommodate a Full Time work and Full Time school schedule. My only recommendation moving forward, is if this is a mandatory requisite, making solid partnerships with all local counties to make it easier for students who are known as “commuters”. My service outreach at the Reston Library would not be as fulfilling as I would have expected. The outreach time is spent showing the same people, week after week, how to do the same thing, log on to the counties computers and check their gmail. I feel like it’s Groundhog Day all over again. I was able to work on my patients and understanding skills, not to for get Napoleon’s “Girls Like Guys with skills”
We reviewed and exposed ourselves to hands-on experience with so many new technologies and we barely scratched the surface. Acknowledging the history and foundation of the internet was key. However, in evaluations of the mistakes I made in the class, I believe the sensory overload was a substantial part of my withdrawal tied to the government environment I am exposed to at work. Having a preconception that not all of the audience (student body) is looking to expose themselves on the internet and might be looking at how not to expose themselves would be a twist on a class discussion topic. My lessons learned in NCLC249 has taught me there are so many cool things we can do on the Web and a lot if it stems from collaboration and a free platform. But at what cost?
